The Potato and the Lemonade Skill
I will admit, I am a pushover, when my dogs stare at me while I eat. Yes, I know, they are more interested in my food than in me, but still, those eyes. The other night, I gave in and decided to give my boys a part of a baked potato. Yep, a potato. Calvin, my serious boy stared at it, licked it, turned up his nose and looked disgusted. If he could talk, I don’t think the words would be kind. And then there was Barkley. Barkley didn’t eat it; he didn’t like it, but he began throwing it around, batting it with his paws, and flinging chunks of it in the air with his mouth. I laughed as I watched him racing around the room, lost in his silly game. In that moment I wished I could be like him. I thought about all the times I would get anxious or sad because something didn’t go exactly as planned, and it would affect my day so much. I wished when life “hands me a potato”, I could respond with an “okay, let’s play!” It reminded me of the Lemonade Skill from DBT. When you are handed lemons, make lemonade. Barkley definitely lived that concept. He wanted a treat, which he didn’t get, but he found his lemonade through play. I want to be like that – I want to be a Barkley with a potato and find the good in more moments, small and large. Barkley and his actions changed the energy in the moment and it made us all feel more positive and connected through laughter.
And, yes, Barkley was given a treat fit for the goofball he is.
I know life is not easy, and the Lemonade skill is not trying to say it takes away struggles completely. But I do believe a sweetened moment in a storm is still sweet. I challenge all of you, to be a Barkley; enjoy your “potato” and remind yourself, there is hope and meaning in each day..
In a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming, focusing on the small, everyday moments can be a transformative practice. “Be a Barkley” is not just a catchy phrase; it’s a guiding principle that encourages us to embrace the simplicity of life and find joy even in times of stress and strong emotions. Whether it’s sipping a warm cup of coffee on a quiet morning or sharing laughter with friends, these experiences add richness and depth to our lives.
This blog post will explore how to cultivate a mindset that focuses on the positives and helps foster a deep appreciation for the little things. By adopting the philosophy of “Be a Barkley,” we can enhance our mental well-being and encourage ourselves to enjoy life fully.
The Power of Mindfulness
One of the most effective ways to discover meaning in everyday moments is through the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness encourages us to be present in each moment, observing our surroundings, thoughts, and emotions without judgment.
Every time we engage in mindful eating, for example, we turn an ordinary task into a therapeutic practice. By concentrating on the flavors, textures, and aromas of our food, we can transform mealtimes into rituals of gratitude and enjoyment. This approach fosters a deeper connection to our senses, providing a profound sense of fulfillment.

Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures
Living a life where one embraces “Be a Barkley” means recognizing the beauty in simplicity. It’s easy to overlook the little pleasures that surround us, yet these moments can be the source of great joy.
Consider the joy of a wildflower blooming in your garden, the sound of birds chirping in the morning, or the taste of a homemade meal cooked with love. Each of these experiences contributes to a rich tapestry of life.
Additionally, creating culinary experiences at home can be an act of therapy in itself. Cooking doesn’t just satisfy our hunger; it creates opportunities for connection. Inviting loved ones to gather in the kitchen can turn meal prep into a joyful activity filled with laughter and shared memories.
The Importance of Daily Reflection
Another important aspect of enjoying life is to periodically reflect on our days. Taking a few moments at the end of each day to consider what made us smile or what brought us joy can help solidify those moments in our minds.
Moreover, this practice acts as a reminder of the good moments, no matter how small. It reinforces positivity in our lives and creates a habit of looking out for the wonderful things that happen each day.
Embracing Nature's Beauty
Nature has an innate ability to uplift our spirits and recharge our minds. Embracing time outdoors can significantly contribute to a deeper appreciation for life.
An early morning walk can offer a breath of fresh air and an opportunity to connect with nature. Feeling the ground beneath your feet, listening to rustling leaves in the breeze, and observing the colors of the season can provide an instant sense of peace. Simply enjoying a sunset provides a steady reminder of life’s beauty and the importance of slowing down.
Cultivating Connections
Bonds with friends and family are crucial for a fulfilling life. By intentionally fostering connections, we create a network of support and joy that enriches our everyday experiences.
Regular phone calls, gatherings, or even leaving a thoughtful note for a loved one can reinforce these connections. Laughter and shared experiences are essential in building memories and appreciating life more fully.
Furthermore, volunteering or engaging in community events can create new connections while allowing us to give back. This sense of purpose adds layers of meaning to our days and helps cultivate a feeling of belonging.
Living with Gratitude
Gratitude is a powerful tool that has the ability to shift our perspective from scarcity to abundance. By recognizing the good in our lives, we promote a mindset of abundance, helping us fully enjoy life.
Practices such as keeping a gratitude journal are fantastic starting points. By writing down a few things we are grateful for at the end of each day, we actively focus our minds on the positives.
Simple verbal affirmations shared with loved ones can create an atmosphere of positivity and connection. Expressing gratitude can transform relationships and our overall attitude toward life.
Conclusion
Finding meaning in everyday moments is a journey rather than a destination. Adopting the “Be a Barkley” philosophy encourages us to savor life and take notice of all the beauty surrounding us. Whether through mindfulness, cultivating connections, engaging with nature, or practicing gratitude, we can all find ways to inject meaning into our daily routines.
Remember to embrace the simplicity of life and discover the joy in everyday moments. When we slow down, we uncover the richness of our experiences and create a nurturing environment for both ourselves and those around us. Enjoy life, transform daily routines, and be present; each moment holds the potential for meaning waiting to be uncovered.
